Open Source Technology Seminar held on 17th Dec. 2011 at RCOEM

A seminar addressing the topic “Open Source Technology” was held at Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management.

The event was attended mainly by students pursuing engineering in Computer Science. It was a very informative session, as students were not only made aware about “Open Source Technology” but were also introduced to the resourcefulness of the same in their prospective career planning and coding passion.

The seminar covered various aspects of the topic ranging from ‘What is open source software’ to ‘How can one become involved’. The concept of ‘mailing list’ was an eye opener to the alternative effective ways of researching, questioning and developing one’s skills as a programmer. The idea was introduced to the students in an easily understandable and intriguing manner. It was explained as a more effective way of getting experienced and relevant information about any topic by using the subject specific mailing list rather than the ‘Google Search’ and its n million web references.

Overall, it was truly an enjoyable ride of about an hour and a half, comprising valuable gain of knowledge on the part of students, which was made more interactive and interesting by the small random quiz session by Tushar sir. T-shirts were given as a reward for every correct answer, which will be held as a dear souvenir by the enthralled recipients. In order to provide a strong motivating force for the students to be a part of Technology user groups, Rohit Sawarkar (CSE final year student) was announced as college representative.

Based on the feedback of students, it can be firmly said that the seminar has effectively opened the students’ minds to new vistas, and from the enthusiastic response of the students, JUGNagpur is bound to witness an increase in their list of inquisitive minds.
